Nebraska Rolls Past NC State in Season Opener

Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 10 Nebraska rifle team (1-0, 1-0 GARC) picked up a win in their season-opening match on Friday, downing No. 18 NC State (0-1, 0-1 GARC) by a score of 4,635-4,582 at the NU Rifle Range. The Huskers were paced by senior Katelyn Woltersdorf, who earned a smallbore title while adding a second-place finish in air rifle. NU freshman Denise Martin had a strong showing in her first match as a Husker, shooting her way to the air rifle title on the day.

"Today was a great foundation for our season," Head Coach Stacy Underwood said. "Today's match was the team's reward for pushing themselves and giving that little bit of effort every day on the range and at workouts."

Nebraska started the day on the smallbore range, where the Huskers cruised to a combined score of 2,306 while logging the top four scores on the day. Woltersdorf's mark of 581 was good to lead the meet, while fellow senior Janine Dutton fired her way to a 579 for second place. Junior Sunny Russell and teammate Martin fired identical scores of 573 to tie for third. Sophomore Kelsey Hansen rounded out Nebraska's declared smallbore competitors, firing a score of 567.

The Big Red moved on to air rifle, posting an combined score of 2,329. Freshman Martin led the way for the Big Red, capturing the event title with a score of 587. Woltersdorf continued her strong showing on the day, coming in at second with a mark of 584. Russell, Hansen and Dutton rounded out Nebraska's declared competitors for the Huskers with each firing a 579 on the day.

"While we are proud of our performance today, I know the team is still committed to our 'just 1 percent more' mantra and working to build upon our efforts," Underwood said. "Fortunately, we have that opportunity to compete again on Sunday and put into practice the things we learned today."

The Huskers will be back in action again on Sunday, facing the No. 4 Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks at the NU Rifle Range. The match is slated for an 8 a.m. start with free live stats available at Huskers.com.
