Deeg Shines for Huskers in Colorado
Wolcott, Colo. - True freshman Cassie Deeg fired a three-under-par 69 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team in the opening round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club on Monday.
Deeg's 69 placed her in a tie for second after one round, while helping the Huskers to a tie for eighth at 303 in an 18-team field that includes nine top-50 teams in the Golfweek rankings. Nebraska sits seven strokes ahead of national No. 1 UCLA (310). NU also sits one stroke ahead of No. 29 Florida State (304), eight strokes in front of No. 31 Tulsa (311) and two strokes ahead of No. 44 Denver (305).
No. 25 Oklahoma and No. 26 Pepperdine are tied for the tournament lead at 286 after the first round. The Sooners and Waves sit six strokes ahead of No. 31 UC Davis (292), while Campbell and East Tennessee State are tied for fourth at 298 in a field that features teams from 18 conferences from around the country.
Deeg's impressive round included five birdies and just two bogeys, while she added 11 pars on the 6,236-yard, par-72 Fazio Course at Red Sky. After carding a 35 with two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, the freshman from Hugo, Minn., added a 34 with three birdies and a bogey on the back.
Deeg wasn't the only Husker to produce a career-best round on Monday. Junior Katelyn Wright matched the best round of her collegiate career with a one-under-par 71. The Incline Village, Nev., native played solid from start to finish, notching three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars on the day. She shot a 35 on the front nine, before adding a 36 on the back. Wright enters Tuesday's second round in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard.
Fellow junior Steffi Neisen settled for a 79 to tie for 61st on Monday, while redshirt freshman Morgan Smejkal rounded out the Huskers' top four with an 84 to close the day in a tie for 85th.
Oklahoma's Chirapat Jao-Javanil leads the 90-player field after firing a four-under-par 68 in the opening round. Jao-Javanil sits one stroke in front of OU teammate Anne-Catherine Tangu, Pepperdine's Grace Na and Deeg. Oklahoma's Emily Collins (70) and San Diego State's Christine Wong (70) rounded out the top five after the first round.
