Huskers Capture Fairway Club Title

Nebraska City, Neb. - The Nebraska men's golf team opened its season with a victory for the second consecutive year at the Fairway Club Invitational on Tuesday, winning by one stroke at ArborLinks Golf Course.

On a tough day of scoring for the field, the Huskers shot 301 for a 54-hole total of 899. On Monday, NU posted scores of 306 and 292. Illinois State fired 296 as a team in Tuesday's final round, but fell one stroke short of Nebraska's total. Oral Roberts finished third at 902.

Senior Kevin Gillick led the Huskers on Tuesday with a 1-over-par 73. His 219 total over three rounds earned him a tie-for-first. However, he lost a scorecard playoff to Illinois State's Ricky Heardon. Oral Roberts' Shannon Allen finished third at 220.

Aaron Wong, who held the 36-hole lead, carded an 83 in the final round. The freshman tied for seventh at 223 strokes. Wong posted 72 and 68 on Monday.

Fellow newcomer Kolton Lapa tied for 23rd at 231. Lapa posted 77 on Tuesday after 78 and 76 on Monday. Junior Manuel Lavin finished one stroke behind Lapa at 232. Lavin, a junior, tied for 27th. He shot a pair of 79s on Monday.

Rounding out the Husker lineup was Matt Record, who tied for 42nd in his NU debut. Record matched 79s on the first day before firing a 5-over-par 77 in the final round. His three-round total was 235.

Ross Dickson, Jordan Reinertson, Neil Dufford and Ryan Grassel played as individuals at ArborLinks. Dickson earned his best finish as a Husker, tying for ninth. Reinertson finished 17th at 228 after an 82 in the final round. Dufford also shot an 82 in the final round to tie for 20th. Grassel tied for 31st at 233 strokes.

The Huskers return to action Sept. 22-23 for the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
