Miles Meets with Media to Preview Season

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln - Nebraska Coach Tim Miles provided a frank assessment of the Huskers when he met with the media to preview the upcoming season on Thursday.

"I like this group," Miles said. "They are hard-working, but we have challenges to overcome."

Some of the challenges Miles, who spent the past five seasons turning around the Colorado State program, mentioned included replacing four starters from a team that finished 11th in the Big Ten and relying on a roster that may have as few as eight scholarship players for the upcoming season.

Nebraska will be relying on its newcomers, and the three scholarship freshmen, Benny Parker, Shavon Shields and Sergej Vucetic could make heavy contributions early on.

"I think I've coached and recruited the all-time leading scorer at most of the school's I've been at, which bodes well for young people playing immediately, which is how you become the all-time leading scorer at your school," Miles said. "We're as favorable as anybody for allowing young people to come up and play immediately."

Miles highlighted Shields' basketball IQ, the quickness of Parker and the size and skill level of Vucetic when describing the Huskers' newcomers, and mentioned that no decision has been made on junior college transfer Deverell Biggs, who may redshirt the upcoming season.

Miles hit on the new role for senior Brandon Ubel, the leadership the senior class has provided in the transition and what he defines as a successful first season in the 20-minute chat with the media. To watch the entire press conference, click on the link at the top of the page.
