Lincoln - Five Nebraska women's golfers captured academic All-Big Ten accolades when the conference office announced its academic awards on Wednesday, May 29.
Juniors Steffi Neisen and Katelyn Wright headlined the group of academic All-Big Ten selections. Neisen, a native of New Prague, Minn., claimed academic All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season as a social science education major.
Wright, a native of Incline Village, Nev., earned her first academic All-Big Ten award as a textiles, merchandising and fashion design major. She also led the Huskers with a 77.39 stroke average on the season.
Redshirt freshmen Jackie O'Doherty (Lincoln, Neb.), Morgan Smejkal (Columbus, Neb.) and Cassidy Stelzmiller (Placerville, Calif.) also earned their first academic All-Big Ten awards of their careers.
To be eligible for academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Overall, the conference recognized 1,279 spring and at-large sports student-athletes with academic All-Big Ten honors.
The conference office will also present the Distinguished Scholar Award in July. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school. The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award was established by conference Faculty Representatives as an addition to the conference’s academic All-Big Ten program.
