Huskers Start Spring Practice

Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team began its 2013 spring practice season Saturday afternoon, as the Huskers practiced in the Hawks Championship Center and the outside practice field for just over two hours in short and helmets.

After practice, head coach Bo Pelini addressed the media about the first day of practice saying that it was a good first day of practice, noting that he liked the attitude and the team brought with them during practice

“It was a good first day, I just told the team I thought we did a lot of good things and we have a lot of things to learn from.” Pelini said, “I thought the attitude was good, the tempo was good, a lot of things to coach and get better from.”

After losing eight seniors on the defensive side of the ball, the Huskers are expected to have a fairly inexperienced defense during the 2013 season, but Pelini believes the players will respond well to the new playing responsibilities.

"I have been in this situation before, our guys have a base, they were in meetings all last year and they went through a fall camp, so it is not like they are starting from day-one.”

A player that turned some heads Saturday was sophomore I-back Imani Cross. Cross who carried the ball 55 times rushing for 324 yards with seven touchdowns is expected to be a key contributor for the Husker backfield this upcoming season.

“He (Imani) played around 230 (lbs.) last year and I think he is weighing around 220 now.” Pelini said, “ I want to evaluate how he is going to feel playing at the weight. He’s a big guy without a lot of body fat.”

The Huskers will be back on the practice field on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday next week for their first full week of spring ball. Continue to check back to Huskers.com throughout the spring for all your spring football updates.
