Former Husker All-American Mary Weatherholt began her professional career with a big win in Austin, Texas last week. In doubles play, Weatherholt and partner Catherine Harrison (USA) won the Women’s Pro Tennis of Austin Tournament title and a $10,000 prize. Weatherholt also qualified for the finals in the singles competition.
In the first round of doubles play, Weatherholt and Harrison defeated Yuka Higuchi and Hirono Watanabe of Japan (6-4, 6-4). Weatherholt and Harrison earned another win in the quarterfinal by beating the U.S. duo of Stephanie Nauta and Rachel May Pierson (6-1, 6-4).
In the semifinals, Weatherholt and Harrison rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rosalia Alda (USA) and Fernanda Contreras Gomez (Mexico).
In the championship match on Saturday, July 26, Weatherholt and Harrison worked their way to another straight-set victory (6-2, 7-5) over Alexandra Cercone and Alexa Guarachi (USA).
In singles play, Weatherholt came back to defeat Alexa Guarachi (USA) in a three-set thriller (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2) to advance to the semifinals.
Weatherholt earned a trip to the singles final by rolling to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Nives Baric of Australia. In the singles championship match on Sunday July 27, Weatherholt suffered a 6-3, 7-6 (7) loss to Kelly Chen (USA) to add a second-place finish to a successful weekend.
