Lincoln—The Nebraska football team continued its 2013 spring practice season Monday afternoon, practicing for just over two hours inside the Hawks Championship Center in full pads.

Defensive Coordinator John Papuchis met with media following practice, noting that the Husker defense is continuing to make strides each and every practice this spring.

“We really made a big jump I thought last week in terms of our general understanding of the entire defense.” Papuchis said, “We’ve got to keep doing that this week. This is a big week.”

One player to look for at the annual Nebraska Red-White spring game Saturday is redshirt freshman Greg McMullen. The Akron, Ohio product has impressed the coaches, most notably at this last Saturday’s scrimmage.

“He is a big physical kid who is athletic and is hard to block,” Papuchis said, “I told Greg after the scrimmage ‘we have only coached you for 11 or 12 practices, in the big scheme of things that’s not very much. I thought he took a good step forward Saturday.”

One thing that Papuchis wants to see happen this week as spring practice wraps up is the NU defense to keep getting better.

“I want us to be better when we leave the practice field on Wednesday than we were today, and I want us to better when we leave the game field on Saturday than we were today.” Papuchis said, “If we keep taking strides, those little steps will add up come Aug. 31.”

The Nebraska football team has one practice until its annual Red-White Spring Game on April 6. The scrimmage will be televised on the Big Ten Network at 2 p.m. (CT) Continue to check back to Huskers.com throughout the spring for all your spring football updates.
