The Nebraska bowling team won its first
tournament championship this season Sunday at the Mid-Winter Invitational in
Jonesboro, Ark. The Huskers had an overall record of 10-3 over the three-day event
edging out Central Missouri for the tournament championship.
Head Coach Bill Straub believes the team
performed at a high level throughout the weekend in the highly competitive 16
team field, and believes that some strategic planning in the off-season has
helped out this young group of Huskers.
“We didn’t compete a lot during first semester
is so we can practice more,” Straub said, “It works great with this young team
and in my opinion it all cumulates to the success we have seen over the
weekend.” Straub said.
Leading the Huskers over the weekend was
all-tournament selection Liz Kuhlkin. The sophomore finished fourth in the
individual standings recording a total pinfall of 1094. Senior Kristi Mickelson
finished sixth in competition with a total pinfall of 1070.
Other Huskers to note were sophomore Elise
Bolton whom finished 15th overall. Bolton, fresh off of a stellar
performance at the Team USA trials tallied a total pinfall of 988. Sophomore
Andrea Ruiz also helped NU in competition, placing 16th with a
total pinfall of 975.
