Lincoln - Former Nebraska All-American third-baseman Cody Asche recently made his Major League debut with the Philadelphia Phillies.

A fourth-round pick by the Phillies in 2011, Asche made his debut on July 30 against San Francisco and made his first start the following day against the Giants. He picked up his first career hit on Aug. 1 against the Giants in the bottom of the ninth against Sergio Romo.

"He’s pretty good, he had a pretty good season for a guy who jumped from Double-A to Triple-A,” said Phillies Manage Charlie Manuel. “I’m looking forward to seeing him play. I liked what I saw in spring training. He’s a line-drive hitter but has power when he hits the ball up in the air and from what I saw he’s very adequate at third base, and has been improving as far as third base goes and he looked pretty good when I saw him in spring training."

Last season, Asche hit .349 with 13 doubles and 25 RBIs for Single-A Clearwater in 62 games before getting promoted for Double-A Reading. He went on to hit .300 with 10 homers and 20 doubles, along with 47 RBIs.

Asche opened the 2013 season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he was hitting .295 with 24 doubles, four triples, 15 home runs and 68 RBIs over 104 games.

Asche is the 34th former Husker to reach the Majors.
