Weatherholt Rolls to Sweet 16

Urbana, Ill. - Nebraska All-American Mary Weatherholt stormed into the third round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship with another straight-set win on Thursday morning at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.

Weatherholt, who is ranked No. 11 nationally and essentially the No. 14 seed in the tournament, rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 43 Klara Fabikova from California. Weatherholt's win was the first victory of the second round by any women's player at the NCAA Singles Championship and secured her Nebraska's first-ever spot in the round of 16 in singles play. The senior from Prairie Village, Kan., advanced to Thursday's second round with a 6-4, 6-4, win over UNLV's No. 38 Aleksandra Josifoska on Wednesday.

Last week, Weatherholt also led the Huskers to their first-ever Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Team Championship.

With her 203rd career combined victory and the 120th singles win of her career, Weatherholt improved to 27-1 in singles on the year. She will advance to take on No. 3 seed Robin Anderson from UCLA, who posted a 7-6 (1), 6-2 victory over No. 26 Katie Le from Santa Clara. Anderson opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 28 Nadia Ravita from Kentucky on Wednesday morning.

Weatherholt will open doubles play with fellow Husker senior All-American Patricia Veresova Thursday at 4 p.m. Weatherholt/Veresova are the 32-team tournament's No. 3 seed and will face No. 34-ranked Masa Grgan and Abigail Tere-Apisah from Georgia State.

Weatherholt's third-round singles opponent, Robin Anderson from UCLA, also is scheduled to compete in first-round doubles action alongside partner Skylar Morton at 4 p.m., against the Michigan duo of Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender. Anderson/Morton are ranked No. 25 nationally, while Bektas/Bolender are ranked No. 6.

In other first-round singles action on Wednesday, No. 1 seed Lauren Embree from Florida was upset by No. 21 Jacqueline Cako from Arizona State, 6-3, 6-2. The tournament's No. 2 seed Sabrina Santamaria from USC cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Texas A&M's No. 52 Nazari Urbina.

The tournament's No. 4 (Christina Sanchez-Quintanar, Texas A&M), No. 5 (Zsofi Susanyi, California), No. 6 (Lauren Henning, Georgia) and No. 7 seeds (Gina Suarez-Malaguti, North Carolina) all advanced to the second round, but No. 8 seed Anett Schutting from California fell. The nation's No. 9-ranked player, Danielle Lao from USC, also suffered an upset.

Times for Friday's matches will be announced at the conclusion of today's action. The final set of Thursday's singles matches were set to begin at 12:30 p.m. The final times for today's first-round doubles matches are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
