Palm Desert, Calif. - The Nebraska men's golf team is
tied for seventh after shooting an 8-over-par 296 in the opening round of the
Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Friday.
The Huskers
trail leader TCU by 19 strokes with 36 holes to play. St. Mary's, San Francisco
and Texas Tech and tied for second at 284 strokes. TCU's Julien Brun and Texas
Tech's Clement Sordet are tied for first individually after each carding
4-under-par 68s in the first round.
Freshman
Kolton Lapa led Nebraska with a 1-over-par 73 on Friday. Lapa birdied Holes 9,
10, and 14, but bogeyed Nos. 6 through 8 as well as 11. He is tied for 24th,
seeking his fifth top-25 finish in six stroke play events this season.
Seniors
Kevin Gillick and Jordan Reinertson are tied for 36th after 18
holes. The pair matched 74s in the first round and trails the leaders by six
strokes. Gillick birdied Nos. 11 and 14 but bogeyed Nos. 6 and 7, adding a
double bogey on the 12th. Reinertson also doubled No. 12, but made
four birdies and four bogeys for his 2-over-par total.
Matt Record
is tied for 48th after posting a 3-over-par 75 in the first round. Record,
who went 3-0-0 at the Big Ten Match Play two weeks ago, suffered three bogeys
on the front nine for a 39, but made two birdies en route to an even-par 36 on
the back nine.
Newcomer
Cameron Palmer is in 99th place after producing an 85 on Friday. Sophomore
Ross Dickson, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 83rd
after an 8-over-par 80 in the opening round.
The Wyoming
Desert Intercollegiate resumes on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (CT). The Huskers will
tee off on Hole No. 1 with Kansas, Wichita State and Cal Poly. Live scoring for
