Bradenton,
Fla.
- The Nebraska men's golf team opens its spring season on Friday and Saturday
at the Big Ten Match Play at The Concession Golf Club as its first of seven
events this spring.
The Huskers, who are the 11th seed, will face
No. 6-seed Purdue in the first round at 7:10 a.m. CT. The winner will advance
to the quarterfinals against No. 3-seed Iowa on Friday afternoon. The
semifinals and finals will be contested on Saturday.
Nebraska is looking to build off a fall season which saw
the Huskers open with a victory at the Fairway Club Invitational and add three
additional top-10s in four tournaments. Newcomer Kolton Lapa led the team in
stroke average with a 74.00 over 14 rounds. Lapa, a freshman, and sophomore
Ross Dickson were the only Huskers to compete in every tournament during the fall.
Both Lapa and Dickson will be among six Huskers battling
for five spots at the Big Ten Match Play this weekend. Dickson's stroke average
was 74.43 with his best finish a tie for third at the D.A. Weibring
Intercollegiate.
Senior Kevin Gillick will also travel with the team to
Florida. He competed in six rounds during the fall for a 75.00 stroke average.
Gillick's best finish was a tie for first at the season-opening Fairway Club
Invitational, which featured a 3-under-par 69 in the second round.
Sophomore Cameron Palmer was added to the NU roster in
the offseason and will compete for a spot at The Concession Golf Club. Sophomore
Josh Reinertson could see his first action of the season this weekend. In his
Husker career, Reinertson has played three rounds for a stroke average of 88.00
despite not competing in the fall.
Junior Matt Record will also make the trip. Record played
11 rounds in the fall for a 74.72 stroke average. His best finish was a tie for
eighth at the season-closing Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational.
