Phoenix, Ariz. – The Nebraska sand volleyball team opened play at the Grand Canyon University Tournament on Friday in Phoenix, Ariz.

In the first round of play, Amber Rolfzen and Justine Wong-Orantes led Nebraska as the No. 1 duo with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) win over Kaitlynn Usmus and Alex Goodman of Grand Canyon.

Nebraska’s No. 2 pair of Mary Pollmiller and Kelsey Fien defeated Kaylee Dombroski and Brooke Razo of Grand Canyon 2-0 (21-16, 21-15). At the No. 3 spot, Alicia Ostrander and Brenna Lyles topped Arizona’s Rachel Rhoades and Sarah Seiber 2-0 (21-13, 21-12).

Alexa Ethridge and Cecilia Hall dropped a 2-1 (21-19, 17-21, 15-11) match to Ronnie Lewis and Taylor Arizobal of Arizona, while Kira Larson and Melanie Keil fell in two sets (22-20, 21-19) to Madison Witt and McKenna Witt of Arizona.

With three Husker teams still competing, quarterfinal play in the Grand Canyon Tournament will continue tomorrow at 12 p.m. CT.
