Huskers Open 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships
Columbus, Ohio- The Nebraska track and field team kicked off the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University on Friday. During the three-day meet the Husker men are in search of their first conference team title since 2010, while the Husker women are looking for their first conference title since winning the indoor crown in 2012.
Veronica Grizzle posted a 10th-place finish in the women’s hammer throw, notching a mark of 181-8 (55.38). Mary Morales came in 16th with a throw of 173-4 (52.84), while Tristen Sharp posted a throw of 168-5 (51.35) and Carlie Pinkelman tabbed a mark of 167-2 (50.97). In the men’s hammer throw, Cole Ingram finished with a mark of 186-5 (56.82) for 15th.
Defending Big Ten decathlon champion Bjorn Barrefors finished the first of two days of competition in second-place with 3,857 points. He began the day with a time of 11.03 in the 100 meters and went on to post a leap of 23-5 ½ (7.15) in the long jump. In the shot put he tallied the top throw in the event with a mark of 46-5 ¼ (14.15). He notched a high jump of 6-2 (1.88) before ending the day with a time of 52.13 in the 400 meters. He will look to defend his conference title as competition continues tomorrow.
After one day of competition, Teran Walford is tied for fourth in the decathlon, with 3,828 points. He began the day with a time of 10.99 in the 100 meters before recording a personal-best leap of 22-6 ½ (6.87) in the long jump. He posted a throw of 40-7 (12.37) in the shot put and went on to notch a high jump of 6-2 (1.88) prior to tallying the top time in the 400 meters with a personal-best run of 49.10.
Anne Martin completed the first day of heptathlon action with 3,221 points for fifth. She began competition with a time of 14.50 in the 100-meter hurdles. In the second event of the day she posted a season-best leap of 5-6 (1.68). Martin recorded a throw of 37-5 ¾ (11.42) in the shot put, before running a season-best time of 25.31 in the 200 meters to end the day.
Jourdan Doffeny ended her first day of heptathlon competition in eighth-place with a total of 3,109 points. She posted a time of 14.20 in the 100-meter hurdles and went on to tally a personal-best leap of 5-1 ¼ (1.56) in the high jump. Doffeny then posted a personal-best throw of 37-6 ¾ (11.45) in the shot put, before notching a season-best time of 25.46 in the 200 meters.
Jordan Stiens closed the day with 3,016 points for ninth. She began with a personal-best time of 14.11 in the 100-meter hurdles and finished with a jump of 4-11 (1.50) in the high jump. Stiens followed that with a season-best throw of 38-3 ¼ (11.66) in the shot put, before a season-best time of 26.05 in the 200 meters.
The women’s pole vault was originally scheduled for Friday, but was moved to Saturday due to inclement weather.
The 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships continue tomorrow with combined events action getting underway at 8:30 a.m. CT with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles and the heptathlon long jump at 9:15 a.m. The men's long jump begins at 12:20 p.m., while the women's 4x100 meter relay trials begin at 1:10 p.m.
