Collura, Sprinters Pace Huskers on Day One

Iowa City, Iowa - Taryn Collura finished third in the 50 free, the Nebraska 200 free relay team took third, and the Huskers finished the opening day of the Hawkeye Invitational in third place on Friday. Nebraska (149) trails Notre Dame (232) and Boise State (204), but leads Iowa (130) and Denver (126). 

In the evening session's first event, Nebraska placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.36. For the team of Alexandra Bilunas, Collura, Rebekah Land and Shannon Guy, the time marked a season best in the event and earned them the fifth-fastest time in school history.

The session's second event saw Bailey Pons and Morgan Flannigan finish fifth and seventh in the 500-yard freestyle for the Huskers. Pons (4:51.80) recorded a season best in the finals, while Flannigan (4:53.62) swam a career-best time in the prelims.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Samantha Hardewig and Julia Roller both qualified for the finals, finishing 13th and 20th for Nebraska. Hardewig (2:03.95) and Dunn (2:05.30) both swam career-best times in the event, with Hardewig's top time coming in the finals and Roller's in the preliminaries.

Nebraska's top individual finish came in the 50-yard freestyle, which saw Collura finish third in a season-best 22.92. Bilunas and Land placed 10th and 13th, respectively. All 10 Huskers who competed in the event set season-best times, including a career-best 23.22 for Bilunas in the finals.

In the diving well, Anna Filipcic (277.15) and Nicole Schwery (249.35) each advanced to the evening's finals, placing fourth and seventh. Payton Michaud (252.50) also finished in the top ten for the Huskers, placing ninth.

The Huskers concluded the day with a 10th-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. Nebraska's team of Jacqueline Juffer, Natalie Morris, Collura and Guy finished in a time of 3:46.26.
