Weatherholt Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals
Urbana, Ill. – Nebraska senior All-American Mary Weatherholt continued her record-breaking season in style Friday morning, posting a 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-0 win over UCLA’s Robin Anderson to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Weatherholt, who improved to 28-1 on the season, now advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals, where she will face either Georgia’s Lauren Herring, the No. 6 seed, at Noon (CT) on Saturday. Herring, the highest ranked player in the quarterfinals, was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Stanford's Krista Hardebeck on Friday.
Weatherholt’s NCAA quarterfinals appearance is the farthest a Husker women’s tennis player has advanced in NCAA competition.
The Husker senior regrouped from a tough end of the first set, as Weatherholt led the two-time UCLA All-American 6-5 and had two set points before Robinson bounced back to tie the first set at 6-all. Weatherholt then jumped out to 3-0 lead in the tie-breaker, but Anderson bounced back by winning seven of the next eight points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
That would be the final game Anderson, the tournament’s No. 3 seed who came into the quarterfinals with a 30-5 record, would win, as Weatherholt blitzed the Bruin with identical 6-0 scores and the second and third set.
Friday’s singles match is the first of two contests Weatherholt will compete in today, as she will team with Patricia Veresova in doubles and face the team of Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans from William and Mary in a round of 16 doubles match at 3 p.m.
