Wright Captures Shot Put Title at Kansas Relays
Lawrence, Kan. – The Nebraska track and field team took to the track in Lawrence, Kan., again on Friday for the third day of action at the Kansas Relays. Chad Wright claimed the Huskers’ first event title of the weekend as he finished first in the men’s shot put.
Wright won the men’s shot put with a throw of 58-9 ¼ (17.91), while Taylor Shapland finished eighth with a season-best throw of 54-5 ¼ (16.59). In the men’s javelin, Landon Nelson finished with a season-best throw of 178-5 (54.39).
Annie Jackson was the top collegiate finisher in the women’s shot put on Friday, posting a throw of 53-7 (16.33). Her mark is a personal best and cements her spot at second in the conference and moves her to 19th nationally. Geneva McCall of Nyac/Nike won the event with a throw of 55-5 (16.89). Carlie Pinkelman finished fourth with a season-best throw of 50-3 ½ (15.33), while Veronica Grizzle finished sixth with a season-best throw of 50-1 ¼ (15.27).
Mara Griva was the top collegiate finisher in the women’s triple jump, finishing with a leap of 41-1 (12.52). Her jump ranks sixth in the Big Ten. Amanda Smock of Nyac/Asics took the event with a jump of 43-8 ½ (13.32). Ellie Ewere finished sixth with a jump of 39-4 ½ (12.00) which ranks seventh in the conference. Devandrew Johnson captured fourth place in the men’s triple jump, posting a leap of 48-8 (14.83).
Jillanna Scanlan finished third in the high jump with a leap of 5-6 (1.68). Marusa Cernjul finished with a jump of 5-4 ¼ (1.63), while Katie Smith was 10th with a jump of 5-4 ¼ (1.63).
In the men’s pole vault, Christian Sanderfer recorded a fourth-place finish with a vault of 16-1 ¾ (4.92). Bjorn Barrefors, Craig Driver and Beau Simmons all tallied vaults of 15-7 ¾ (4.77).
The Huskers saw Miles Ukaoma record a time of 14.51 for an eighth-place finish in the men’s 110 meter hurdles and will advance to Saturday’s finals. Sean Pille finished 11th overall with a time of 14.75.
Mara Weekes posted a fifth-place finish in the preliminaries of the women’s 100 meters, notching a time of 12.06 and advancing to tomorrow’s finals. Tim Thompson posted the second-fastest time in the men’s 100 meters preliminaries, recording a clip of 10.67. John Welk finished with a time of 10.81, but will not advance to the finals.
Welk went on to post a time of 22.26 in the 200 meters as he finished eighth in the preliminaries and will move on to the finals tomorrow in that event. In the women’s 400 meters, Lexie Oak qualified for tomorrow’s finals as she finished seventh with a time of 57.13 in the preliminaries.
In the women’s 400 meter hurdles preliminaries, Ellie Grooters advanced to the finals with a sixth-place preliminary finish and a time of 1:01.29. On the men’s side Tibor Koroknai finished first in the preliminaries with a time of 53.04, while Jodi-Rae Blackwood was second with a time of 53.66. Mark Hilderbrand just missed qualifying for the finals with a time of 54.57.
The men’s 4x100 meter relay team of Welk, Dexter McKenzie, Nikita Pankins and Thompson recorded the top preliminary time of 40.87 to advance to the finals. The women’s 4x100 meter relay team of Kari Heck, Weekes, Oak and Breunna McCarty finished fifth in the preliminaries and qualified for tomorrow’s finals with a season-best time of 46.82.
To close out the competition on the track, the women’s 4x400 meter relay team of Weekes, Oak, Anna Minnick and Grooters added a time of 3:52.56 to advance to tomorrow’s finals with a fifth-place finish. The men’s team of Ricco Hall, Christian Sanderfer, Levi Gipson and Cody Rush then finished second in the preliminary round with a time of 3:13.58.
The action at the Kansas Relays gets underway tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. for the men’s long jump and the finals of the men’s 200 meters.
