Eichorst Keeps Radio Focus on Teams, Fans

Shawn Eichorst and Greg Sharpe covered a lot of ground in the first half hour of Tuesday night’s Talk to the Director of Athletics Radio Show before turning the last half hour of the monthly broadcast over to Sharpe’s interviews with Nebraska head coaches Kerry McDermott (tennis) and Gary Pepin (track & field) and senior tennis player Brandon Videtich and senior sprinter Mara Weekes.
On a snowy night in Lincoln, Eichorst showed his excitement for Nebraska football recruiting and emerging improvements for the Husker game-day experience, including a new sound system and WiFi, plus a continued focus on other fan-related needs, such as audio-visual development and smartphone support. Eichorst acknowledged that all areas are vital to keep Nebraska on the cutting edge of the fan experience.
The second-year Director of Athletics also mentioned the Huskers’ ability to show recruits and parents a day in the life of a student-athlete and how Nebraska sets itself apart in such pivotal areas as academics, athletics, life skills, nutrition, strength training and sports medicine.
The show’s second segment focused on other sports already in season and Eichorst’s enthusiasm for softball launching its season this weekend in Las Cruces, N.M., and baseball beginning its season the following week in Tempe, Ariz.
McDermott shared his thoughts on a season that started with a win over Wisconsin in Los Angeles and Videtich discussed getting a sixth-year of eligibility after persevering through an injury-plagued career.
A Hall-of-Famer and the all-time winningest track and field coach in the history of the former Big 12 and Big Eight Conferences, Pepin was enthusiastic about his 34th season at the helm of the Husker men’s and women’s track and field teams. A senior sprinter from Bridgetown, Barbados. Weekes earned 2012 All-America recognition for her role in the NCAA Indoor Distance Medley Relay.
The Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field teams host the annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on the Devaney Center Indoor Track this weekend. Friday’s action begins at noon and Saturday’s finals begin at 10 a.m.
In addition, No. 7 Nebraska hosts No. 11 Michigan in a Big Ten dual wrestling match at 7 p.m. Friday at the Devaney Center. It's Senior Night for Huskers Caleb Kolb, Shawn Nagel and Adam Joseph. It's also Pepsi Pack the House and Youth Night. Admission is $1 for all fans. Pepsi products are also only $1.
The Husker men’s tennis team will host Denver Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Nebraska Tennis Center, and the Husker women’s basketball team returns home to host Michigan State at 2 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
