Huskers Close Competition at Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge

Honolulu, Hawaii – The Nebraska sand volleyball team closed competition at the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge hosted by the University of Hawaii on Saturday. Nebraska’s No. 1 pair of Justine Wong-Orantes and Melanie Keil earned a berth in the quarterfinals of the Gold Bracket.

Wong-Orantes and Keil posted a 1-1 record on the day, starting the round of 16 with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-16, 18-16) win over Sam Hirschmann and Natasja Siljkovic of USC. The duo then fell to Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ of USC 2-0 (18-21, 19-21) in the quarterfinals of the gold bracket.

Mary Pollmiller and Kelsey Fien suffered a 2-0 (15-21, 13-21) loss to Kelly Claes and Alexa Strange of USC in the gold bracket round of 16. The pair then dropped a 2-1 (14-21, 21-18, 13-15) match to Ally Wheeler and Paige Hines of USC in the consolation round.

Also in the gold bracket round of 16, Cecilia Hall and Alexa Ethridge fell 2-0 (14-21, 9-21) to Tayler Higgins and London Chow of Hawaii. Hall and Ethridge then dropped a 2-0 (14-21, 17-21) decision to Jane Croson and Madi Kingdon of Arizona in the consolation round.

Amber Rolfzen and Kadie Rolfzen made an appearance in the gold bracket round of 16. The pair dropped a match to McKenna Witt and Madison Witt of Arizona to open the round, falling 2-0 (18-21, 17-21). The duo also fell to Ali Longon and Ginger Long 2-0 (16-21, 16-21) in the consolation round.

In the silver bracket round of 16, Brenna Lyles and Alicia Ostrander defeated Kara Wong and Jasmine Fujimoto of Hawaii Pacific 2-0 (21-7, 21-12). Kira Larson and Ostrander fell to Brooke Fournier and Kati Duddridge of USC 2-0 (18-21, 23-25) in the quarterfinals.

The Huskers will take on Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade tomorrow in their final match in Hawaii before traveling to Arizona.
