Huskers Finish Ninth at Big Ten Championships

French Lick, Ind. – The Nebraska men’s golf team closed the 2013 Big Ten Championships with a final-round 305 on Sunday to finish ninth.

The Huskers compiled 1,214 strokes in the 72-hole tournament, a 62-over-par total. On Friday, NU opened with 311 before a second-round 297. On Saturday the Huskers managed 301 at the Pete Dye Course, a par-72, 7,152-yard layout. The ninth-place finish marks Nebraska’s ninth top 10 in 11 stroke play events during the 2012-13 campaign.

Freshman Kolton Lapa led the Huskers in the final round as he has much of the year. Lapa made three birdies and three bogeys en route to an even-par 72 on Sunday. The score marked the best NU individual round of the tournament as Lapa tied for 22nd with a 301 total.

Matt Record finished 32nd with 304 strokes. In the final round, he managed three birdies and five bogeys for a 2-over-par 74. The junior carded two rounds of 76 and a 78 over the first two days in French Lick.

Senior Jordan Reinertson birdied the par-5 seventh hole on Sunday but posted a 10-over-par 82. On Friday, Reinertson opened with 78 before a second-round 73 and paced his way to a 74 on Saturday. His 307 total earns him a tie for 37th.

Manuel Lavin tied for 52nd with 313 strokes. In the final round, the junior made two birdies and seven bogeys en route to a 5-over-par 77. Neil Dufford carded a final-round 83 on Sunday. The senior’s 315 total earned him a 56th-place finish.

Illinois won the team title with 1,163 strokes, defeating second-place Minnesota by nine. The Fighting Illini’s Thomas Pieters captured the individual crown by five strokes over teammate Brian Campbell and the Golden Gophers’ Erik Van Rooyen. Pieters posted a 284 total over four rounds.
