Huskers Shoot Back-to-Back Subpar Rounds

El Paso, Texas – All five of Nebraska’s golfers broke par in one of the first two rounds during Friday’s 36-hole marathon of the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational at Butterfield Golf Club.

The Huskers finished the day with 6-under-par 570 at the par-72, 7,307-yard layout. Nebraska opened with 286 before firing 4-under-par 284 in the second round. NU is in sixth place heading into Saturday’s final round and trails tournament leader New Mexico State by 19 strokes.

A pair of Husker newcomers led the way for Nebraska on day one of the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational and sit in a tie for 19th at 142 with 18 holes to go. Freshman Justin Jennings fired the best Husker score of the day with his second-round 3-under-par 69. Jennings reeled off seven birdies during the round and added three birdies in his first-round 73.

Mike Siwa notched a pair of 71s on Friday. The senior made five birdies in the first round and added one in the second round. In the afternoon, Siwa also eagled the par-5 second hole at Butterfield Golf Club.

Ross Dickson made nine birdies on Friday over two rounds. The junior opened with a sizzling 1-under-par 71 before posting 1-over-par 73 in the afternoon. Dickson’s even-par 144 total puts him in a tie for 27th at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational.

Calvin Freeman is tied for 37th at 146 heading into the final round. Freeman used three birdies and an eagle on the 18th en route to a first-round 71. The junior managed two birdies in the second round for 75.

Sophomore Kolton Lapa made back-to-back eagles on the final two holes of his second round en route to 1-under-par 71. Lapa’s 4-under-par surge occurred on the par-5 14th and par-4 15th holes. Lapa carded 76 in the first round for a 147 total and sits in a tie for 44th after Friday’s action.

UTEP’s Martin Simonsen and San Jose State’s Marcus Potter are tied for the individual lead after each posting 8-under-par 136 on Friday.

Saturday’s final round is a 9 a.m., shotgun. Nebraska is paired with Kansas, UTEP and Northern Colorado and will start on Holes 5 through 9. Live scoring for the tournament is available on Golfstat.com at http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/index.cfm?tournament_id=5048.
