Neisen Leads Huskers in Kansas
Manhattan, Kan. - Good scores were few and far between for the 15 teams at the 2013 Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, as the Nebraska women's golf entered Tuesday's final round in seventh place at 642.
High scores were the norm through the first 36 holes on the 6,265-yard, par-72 layout at Colbert Hills on Monday, as Kansas was the only team to engineer a round better than 300. The Jayhawks took control of the team race with an opening-round 303 before adding the best round of the day with an 11-over-par 299 to close at 602.
KU leads the hosts from Kansas State by 13 strokes. The Wildcats achieved rounds of 313 and 302 to close the first 36 holes at 615. Tulsa enters the final round a distant third at 625 (319-306). Overall, 25 of the 30 team rounds completed on the day were scores of 313 or higher.
Three Jayhawks enter the final round in the top four in the individual standings led by Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, who fired rounds of 72 and 74 to end the day at 146. Kawinpakorn was tied with Kansas State's Gianna Misenhelter (75-71-146) atop the leaderboard. Misenhelter was one of only two golfers to produce rounds better than par on Monday, joining Arkansas State's Abigail Laker, who added a 71 of her own after an opening-round 86.
KU's Meghan Potee sits in third (75-75-150), while Jayhawk teammate Thanruttra Boonraksasat is tied for fourth (78-74-152).
Nebraska opened with a 313 to sit in a tie with Kansas State for second after the opening round, but the Huskers settled for a season-high 329 over the second 18 holes.
Steffi Neisen entered the second round in second place after carding an impressive two-over-par 74 in the first round. But the Husker senior from New Prague, Minn., battled her way to an 81 in the second round. Neisen closed the day in a tie for 12th at 155, still firmly in the hunt for a top-10 finish in the 81-player field.
Jordan Chael, a freshman from Overland Park, Kan., added rounds of 79 and 80 to enter the final round in a tie for 20th at 159.
Senior Katelyn Wright heads to the final 18 holes in a tie for 27th at 161 (80-81), while sophomore Cassie Deeg rounded out the list of scorers for the Huskers on Monday in a tie for 53rd at 167 (80-87).
Redshirt freshman Yoorim Kang carded rounds of 84 and 88 to end the day at 172 in a tie for 65th in her first career lineup appearance.
Hannah Luebke provided a bright spot for the Huskers with a solid opening-round 75, while playing as an individual outside the lineup. The sophomore from Stuttgart, Germany, added an 85 in the second round to close the day in a tie for 22nd at 160.
Sophomore Cassidy Stelzmiller rounded out the NU contingent in a tie for 69th (89-85-174).
The tournament's final round begins Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. Live scoring is available at GolfStat.com.
