Huskers Look for Third Tourney Win
The Nebraska bowling team returns to competition after a week off as the Huskers travel to the James Brown Invitational held by Morgan State University in Towson, Md. It will be the largest tournament to date for the Huskers as they compete in the 28-team field. Competition begins Friday morning and will conclude Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Bill Straub believes the team will be ready for the challenge this weekend even though the team has a long travel day on Thursday.
“This will be our longest travel we are going to have this year, so there is more to do and more connections to make.” Straub said, “Hopefully we can get all of our equipment up to the tournament, it’s a long way from home.”
Even though the team had to back out of competition last week for the Southern University Invite do to a format conflict, Straub said that the team has been competing at a high level during practice.
“I like how the team has been performing; hopefully the team can continue their success this weekend.” Straub said, “This is a deep tournament field, and we are excited to see how the team competes against some new competition.”
Last time out
The Nebraska bowling team last competed at the Prairie View A&M Invite in Arlington, Texas Feb. 1-3. The Huskers won the tournament title beating Maryland Eastern Shore University 4-1 on the final day of competition.
Leading the way for the Huskers was sophomore Liz Kuhlkin. Kuhlkin finished third in the individual standings with a 290.8 average. She earned a spot on the all-tournament team for the second time this season.
Straub was impressed with Kuhlkin’s overall performance, as well as her intensity in the first two days of competition.
“Liz’s performance through the first two days was tremendous; she really kept the team in it.”
Freshman Beth Hedley added another strong performance to her 2012-13 campaign, recording a 202 on the final day of competition. Hedley finished 22nd in the individual standings, bowling a five-game average of 183.4.
The Huskers finished the weekend with an overall record of 11-2, while finishing fourth in total team pinfall with 8442.
