Last Time Out:
Lapa Propels Huskers to Seventh-Place Finish
Nebraska’s balanced scoring effort on Tuesday, Sept. 24, led to the Huskers’ best score of the week in the final round of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.

Nebraska finished seventh after firing a final-round 294 at Colorado National Golf Club, a par-72, 7,741-yard layout. The Husker started the day by completing the second round, which was shortened due to darkness on Monday. NU posted 295 in the second round after a first-round 309.

Sophomore Kolton Lapa notched the best NU finish for the second consecutive week with a tie for 17th. On Tuesday, Lapa birdied two of his first seven holes (Nos. 7 and 11) before adding another on the par-4 17th for 2-over-par 74. He finishes the tournament at 223 after posting 79 and 70 in the first two rounds.

Calvin Freeman managed the best Husker score of the day with even-par 72. Playing in his first event for Nebraska, Freeman bogeyed two of his first four holes (Nos. 7 and 10) on Tuesday but responded with birdies on Nos. 12, 16, 17 and 1 in the final round. Freeman tied for 27th at 225.

Senior Matt Record notched a tie for 36th with 227 strokes over three rounds. Record used bookend 74s at Colorado National Golf Club to go along with a second-round 79. In the final round, he made three birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey.

Justin Jennings completed his first collegiate tournament with 2-over-par 74. Starting on Hole No. 6, the freshman bogeyed his first two holes before scorching the back nine for 1-under-par 35. Jennings added a birdie on the par-4 third hole to complete the front nine in 39. Jennings finished tied for 58th at 231.

Junior Ross Dickson closed the Mark Simpson Invitational with 6-over-par 78, which was highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole. Dickson tied for 61st with rounds of 83 and 71 on Monday.

Colorado and Washington State shared the team title, each amassing 882 strokes over the 54-hole event. No playoff was held to determine a champion. Houston Baptist’s Preston Stanley held on for individual medalist honors after a final-round 69 and tournament total of 215.
