Husker Freshmen Grow in Michigan

Ann Arbor, Mich. - The No. 10 Nebraska men's gymnastics team traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., for their first-ever regular season match up against the Wolverines in school history. The Huskers met Michigan at Cliff Keen Arena at 6 p.m. CST on Saturday, earning a team score of 416.050, finishing behind Michigan, who earned a 443.650.

The Huskers kicked off the meet on pommel horse. Senior Eric Schryver broke into the top five overall on the event, earning a 14.15 for his routine. All-around competitor C.J. Schaaf followed just behind, grabbing a 13.75.

NU then moved to floor exercise, looking to continue their growth on the event.. Freshman Travis Gollott earned a new personal best on the event with a 14.60 for his routine. This placed him at sixth overall on the event. Junior Grant Perdue grabbed the No. 3 spot on the event, earning a 15.05.

Nebraska ended the first half of the meet on vault, struggling to match Michigan's strong start at home. Schaaf and teammate Wyatt Aycock tied as the highest scoring vaulters for the Huskers, earning 14.45s. Junior Josh Ungar followed the two seniors, grabbing a 14.25 for his vault.

The Huskers then moved to still rings to start the second half of the meet. Junior Robbie Kocks led NU on the event for the fourth meet in a row, earning a 14.90. This score placed him in third overall on rings, just behind Michigan's Jordan Gaarenstoom and Alex Bubnov, who tied for the event title. Schaaf and senior Zach Hedval finished close together, grabbing a 13.85 and 13.80 respectively.

NU gained momentum during their fifth rotation, high bar, earning a team score of 71.050, their highest event score of the night. Freshman Austin Epperson earned a new personal high, grabbing a 14.45 and fourth overall on the event. Schryver led the Huskers, though, earning a 14.60 and the No. 2 spot on the event. Schryver just barely missed the event title, sitting 0.15 points behind Michigan's Syque Caesar.

The Huskers finished out the meet on parallel bars. Nebraska felt the effect of the large Michigan home crowd, earning a team score of 68.900 on the event. Aycock led the team in their last push of the night, grabbing a 14.00. Sophomore Sam Chamberlain finished just behind Aycock, earning a 13.95 for his routine.

Nebraska finished out the meet with a total team score of 416.050. Husker gymnast Eric Schryver earned second on high bar for the second week in a row. The senior also finished in the top five on pommel horse. Perdue finished in third on floor and Kocks finished third on rings. Aycock (vault), Schaaf (vault) and Epperson (high bar) all finished within the top five on individual events.

NU will continue on to Iowa City, Iowa, for their first televised meet of the season. They will face No. 6 Minnesota again, as well as Iowa at Carver Hawkeye Arena at noon CST. The Huskers will then get a week off before hopping back on a plane, flying to Columbus, Ohio, for the Arnold Challenge on March 1.
