Nebraska Rounds Out Season At No. 62

A young Husker squad finished the 2012-13 season ranked No. 62 in the final Division I ITA men’s tennis national rankings. This marks the fifth straight season the team has solidified a top 75 finish and the eight time in the past nine season. The scarlet and cream rounded out the year with a 10-15 overall record on a 3-8 Big Ten mark that saw them ninth in the conference for the regular season. The program is led by Head Coach Kerry McDermott in his 32nd year at the helm and first-year Assistant Coach Fungai Tongoona, a former player (1999-2002) and graduate of the university in 2003.

The Big Red was led by three seniors Brandon Videtich, Erick Sock, and Andre Stenger. With one junior, one sophomore, and eight freshman, Nebraska saw a year of growth full of inexperienced players but concluded with a solid showing as a unit.

Coach McDermott saw his 350th victory at the head of the proram this season. The win came on March 16 in Georgia where the then-ranked No. 38 Huskers ousted unranked Troy, 4-1.

Freshman Marc Herrmann had a stellar breakout season going 17-20 overall and 10-12 on the spring, playing mostly out of the No. 2 and 3 positions with a few No. 1 appearances. His performance as a new member of the squad earned him the Big Ten Sporstmanship Award for Nebraska for 2013.

Three players received Academic All-Big Ten honors for their contribution both on and off the court. Seniors Videtich and Sock along with redshirt sophopmore Sebastian Florczyk captured the award for their first time.

Sock earned another award from within the Nebraska Huskers Athletics department when he was able to capture the Nebraska Student-Athle HERO Leadership Award for his contribution to Nebraska Athletics off the court.

Should all the young talent on the team return next season and with the addition of any new players that the coaches are able to find, this impressive squad has hope for a promising outing next season in 2013-14.
