The Nebraska football program is proud to announce that 21 members of the 2012 team have been named to the 16th annual Brook Berringer Citizenship Team. The honored student-athletes will be recognized on the field before kickoff of Saturday’s Red-White Spring Game at Memorial Stadium.
The group includes 15 members of Nebraska’s 2013 team, in addition to six players who completed their eligibility in 2012.
The Brook Berringer Citizenship Team was established by the Husker football program in honor of former Nebraska quarterback Brook Berringer, who died in a plane crash in April of 1996. Berringer was a member of NU's back-to-back national championship teams in 1994 and 1995.
Berringer was also one of the most dedicated Husker volunteers in the community with youth, both in Nebraska and in his hometown of Goodland, Kan. The team honors players who display a similar love and dedication for volunteering in the community through Nebraska's nationally recognized Life Skills program.
The group is headlined by Rex Burkhead and Ben Cotton, who are both members of the team for the fourth consecutive year. Four other players are making their third appearance on the Berringer Citizenship Team, including senior fullback C.J. Zimmerer, junior receiver Tyler Evans and 2012 seniors Kyler Reed and Steven Osborne.
Four student-athletes were recognized for the second time including senior offensive linemen Brandon Chapek and Jeremiah Sirles, senior quarterback Ron Kellogg III and sophomore offensive lineman Chris Long. First-time members of the Berringer team include 2012 seniors Seung Hoon Choi and Taylor Dixon, along with I-back Imani Cross, receiver Quincy Enunwa, cornerback Ciante Evans, tight end Trey Foster, defensive tackle Jay Guy, receiver Lane Hovey, tight end Jake Long, offensive guard Spencer Long and linebacker Michael Rose.
The Nebraska football team has continued to be among the most active teams in the local community. The squad has been a finalist for the Life Skills Team Award each of the past eight seasons.
Athletic Director Emeritus Tom Osborne, Brook Berringer’s head coach, will assist with the presentation to the Berringer team recipients, along with members of the Berringer family and Nebraska Associate A.D. for Life Skills Keith Zimmer.
In addition to the Berringer team, 2012 senior tight end Conor McDermott will be honored on Saturday as the recipient of the seventh annual Cletus Fischer Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship is presented annually to a Nebraska football player who has demonstrated a high level of athletic and academic achievement, has completed both his athletic eligibility and undergraduate studies, and has plans to attend post-graduate school.
McDermott was a key contributor at tight end last season and was and Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2012.
