Tulsa, Okla. - The Nebraska men's tennis team kept rolling at the USTA/ITA Central Region Tournament at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday. The Huskers saw two doubles tandems through to the third round and three players advance to the second round of the main draw singles.
In the final round of qualifying singles, Nebraska's Beau Treyz ousted Iowa's Chase Tomlins 6-0, 6-1 while fellow Husker Vasileios Stavropoulos outpaced teammate Scott Elsass 6-1, 6-1, sending both Treyz and Stavropoulos to the main draw. NU's Brandon Videtich fell to Iowa's Dominic Patrick 7-5, 2-6, 0-1 (8) as teammate Bradford Zitsch was defeated by Oklahoma State's Matthew Campbell, ending both Huskers singles run. The last member of the Big Red to end his stay in qualifying singles was Charlie Shin as he was edged by Iowa's Brian Alden.
In the main draw singles, Husker Stavropoulos toppled UMKC's Daniil Ivanov 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 while fellow Nebraska teammate Marc Herrmann scorched Oklahoma State's Trevor Horstman 6-0, 6-1. NU's Dusty Boyer proceeded when his opponent Minnesota's Franz Sydow withdrew from the match. Nebraska's Treyz fell to Oklahoma State's Lucas Gerch 3-6, 6-2, 1-6 while fellow Husker Tom Blackwell was dropped by Drake's Ravi Patel 2-6, 0-6, sending both Nebraska players to the consolation bracket. The final Big Red player to drop to the consolation draw was Andrew Dzulynsky as he was narrowly cut out by ITA pre-season newcomer/freshman No. 10-ranked Oklahoma's Alex Ghilea 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.
In the doubles draw, the scarlet and cream's Stavropoulos and Dzulynsky beat UMKC's Jai Grewal and Jonathan Rodgers 8-4 before falling to Minnesota's Eric Freuh and Leandro Toledo 3-8 in the second round. The Huskers' Court Clark and Shin were defeated by Oklahoma's Austin Siegel and Dane Webb 4-8 while fellow Big Red duo of Zitsch and Videtich fell to Drake's Ben Lott and Euan McIntosh 2-8. Nebraska's Boyer and Blackwell defeated Western Illinois' Cristoph Haertel and Ben Yue 8-4 before toppling Arkansas' Jovan Parlic and Pete Thomason 8-7 (5). NU's Herrmann and Treyz advanced when Minnesota's Sydow and Ruben Weber retired at 7-3 before moving on to outpace Oklahoma State's Horstman and Nathan Roper 8-2.
"It was really good to see that Vasileios (Stavropoulos), and Beau (Treyz) qualified for the main draw singles and we had three guys win first round singles and two doubles teams in the round of sixteen," Nebraska Head Coach Kerry McDermott said. "Our guys showed good fight even when we had some tough losses in singles. I felt we competed hard and I love the energy our team is showing!"
The Huskers see two doubles teams and three singles players through to the next rounds which resume on Saturday. In second round singles, Stavropoulos faces Wichita State's Tin Ostijic while fellow Husker Boyer is slated against Wichita State's Tomislav Gregurovic and Big Red player Herrmann goes head-to-head with Iowa's Jonas Dierckx.
NU's doubles tandem Boyer and Blackwell will challenge Drake's Robin Goodman and Ravi Patel while Huskers Herrmann and Treyz battle Oklahoma's Guillermo Alcorta and Axel Alvarez.
In the singles consolation bracket, Nebraska's Treyz faces Minnesota's Jack Hamburg while Huskers teammate Blackwell heads up against Oklahoma State's Campbell and NU's Dzulynsky will challenge Bradley's Hamish Weerasinghe.
