Weatherholt Caps Career as NCAA Runner-up

Urbana, Ill. - Mary Weatherholt rewrote Nebraska women's tennis history, closing her storied career as the 2013 NCAA Singles runner-up on Monday at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.

Weatherholt, a fifth-year senior from Prairie Village, Kan., went out with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to defending NCAA champion Nicole Gibbs. The junior from Stanford, who earned her second straight NCAA singles title, handed Weatherholt just her second loss of the season.

Although Weatherholt's season ended with a loss, she will be remembered as the greatest tennis player in Nebraska history and one of the finest student-athletes the school has ever produced.

Weatherholt, who went 5-1 at the NCAA Singles Championships, finished with a 30-2 singles record as a senior, while amassing a school-record 123 career singles victories.

As a senior, Weatherholt totaled a 52-5 combined mark in singles and doubles, becoming the first Husker in history to earn All-America honors in singles. She teamed with fellow senior Patricia Veresova to advance to the NCAA Doubles quarterfinals, earning All-America honors on the doubles court as well.

Weatherholt closed her storybook career with a school-record 208 combined victories. She swung her way to a second-place NCAA finish in singles, while joining Veresova in the NCAA Elite Eight. She also led Nebraska to its first-ever appearance at the 16-team NCAA Team Championships, after claiming a share of the Big Ten regular-season title.

The two-time Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Year, Weatherholt was also the 2013 Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year across all sports. She also claimed one of the nation's top honors from the ITA as the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship winner in 2013.
