Norman, Okla. - The Nebraska women's tennis team continued their stay at the USTA/ITA Central Region Women's Tournament at the Headington Family Tennis Center on Saturday. The Huskers have one player left in the singles main draw with Maggy Lehmicke advancing to the round of 16.
In the first round of singles, Lehmicke outpaced Arkansas' Kimberley-Ann Surin 6-4, 6-3. Nebraska's Brittany Brewster ousted Southern Illinois' Natasha Tomishima 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 while fellow Husker Izabella Zgierska toppled Central Arkansas' Simona Horsikyan 7-6 (3), 6-2. NU's Maike Zeppernick scorched South Dakota State's Iasmin Rosa 6-3, 6-0 as the scarlet and cream's Katerina Matysova fell to Oklahoma State's Carla Tur Mari 1-6, 4-6. The Big Red's Lisa Andersson was defeated by ITA pre-season 72-ranked Mizzou's Cierra Gaytan-Leach 4-6, 3-6.
Moving on to second round singles, NU's Lehmicke edged out Wichita State's Rebecca Pedrazzi 6-2, 6-2 while fellow Husker Zgierska lost to Arkansas' Yang Pang 4-6, 6-7 (6). Nebraska's Zeppernick was dropped by Oklahoma's Mia Lancaster 3-6, 1-6, while fellow member of the scarlet and cream Brewster slipped to Minnesota's Tereza Brichacova 2-6, 4-6.
In an extra round of consolation matches from the qualifying bracket, Husker Lauren Wagner was defeated by South Dakota State's Aurora Davis 6-3, 4-6, 4-10.
After dropping to the consolation bracket from her first round singles defeat, NU's Andersson fell to Tulsa's Marcelina Cichon 5-7, 0-6.
The singles bracket round of 16 begins Sunday morning, with Lehmicke set to duke it out against ITA pre-season No. 47-ranked Oklahoma's Hermon Brhane. The results from Sunday's action will be posted here on Huskers.com at the conclusion of play. Stay tuned and Go Big Red!
