The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced Tuesday that former Huskers Jake Long, Spencer Long, Brent Qvale, Pat Smith and C.J. Zimmerer will be inducted with the 2014 class into the NFF Hampshire Honor Society. The honor is reserved for college football players from all divisions who maintained a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average or better. A total of 838 players from 267 schools qualified for membership in the society’s eighth year, the highest membership total since the program's establishment in 2007.
"We continue to raise the bar each year for the number of student-athletes who qualify for membership in the Hampshire Honor Society," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "The Hampshire Honor Society plays an important role in highlighting that college football players clearly play a leadership role in the classroom as well as on the playing field. We congratulate each of these young men for their commitment to excellence."
Nebraska's five honorees finished their eligibility last fall after tremendous careers. Spencer Long, being named to the Hampshire Honor Society for consecutive years, was an anchor on the offensive line for NU throughout his four years.
Jake Long contributed in both the passing and running games during his Husker career, catching passes and leading the way for Husker backs from his tight end position.
Pat Smith spent his final season of eligibility with the Huskers after transferring from Western Illinois and served as NU's primary place-kicker, making 12 of his 13 field goal attempts and 43 of his 45 extra point attempts in 2013.
Brent Qvale was another mainstay on the offensive line, making regular contributions along the offensive line throughout his time at Nebraska.
C.J. Zimmerer paved the way for NU running backs throughout his career at fullback. Zimmerer was also named the 2014 Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion Award Winner and was one of 11 FBS football student-athletes named to the American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team for his community outreach efforts.
Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include:
- Being a starter or a significant contributor in one's last year of eligibility (or a senior who has declared for the NFL Draft) at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university;
- Achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and
- Meeting all NCAA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.
