Track and Field Season Set to Start Next Weekend

The 2014 track and field season is right around the corner as the Huskers open the indoor slate next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18, with the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Devaney Center Indoor Track.

Head Coach Gary Pepin, who is in his 34th year at the helm of the program, is set to lead the Huskers into another successful year. He was named the Big Ten Men’s Outdoor Coach of the Year and the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Men’s Outdoor Coach of the Year in 2013.

The Huskers have compiled a successful history, including 77 individual NCAA Champions and 611 All-Americans.

The team’s list of returning first or second team All-Americans includes Ricco Hall, Levi Gipson, Christian Sanderfer, Cody Rush, Patrick Raedler, Oladapo Akinmoladun, James White, Miles Ukaoma, Jodi-Rae Blackwood, Dexter McKenzie, Tim Thompson, John Welk and Maggie Malone.

Raedler returns as the 2013 Big Ten Indoor long jump champion, while the Huskers also return three members of the 4x400-meter relay team that won the indoor title at the 2013 Big Ten Championships. Wright is the reigning Big Ten outdoor shot put champion, while Gipson, Sanderfer, Ukaoma and Rush won the 4x400-meter relay at the outdoor championships.

Nebraska will host four home meets during the 2014 indoor season before traveling to the Big Ten Championships on Feb. 28-March 1 in Geneva, Ohio. The Huskers will then look to compete at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships hosted by New Mexico March 14-15.

During the outdoor season NU will compete at home three times, including the Nebraska Quad on April 12, the Pre-Drake Meet on April 23 and the Nebraska Invitational on May 10. The outdoor postseason begins with the 2014 Big Ten Championships on May 16-18 in West Lafayette, Ind. The Huskers will then compete May 29-31 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Fayetteville, Ark. The 2014 season will conclude June 11-14 with a trip to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Championships.
