Smallwood Heads Home to Boise
Nebraska Associate Head Coach Sunny Smallwood has returned to her alma mater in a similar role on its women's basketball staff, Boise State announced Tuesday.
Smallwood, who spent nine years as an assistant on Coach Connie Yori's staff, including the past six seasons as NU's associate head coach, joined Gordy Presnell's staff at Boise State. Smallwood, who graduated from Boise State in 1983, began her coaching career by spending seven years at Boise High School from 1983 to 1990. She then coached at Washington State (1990-93), Washington (1993-2004) and California (2004-05) before coming to Nebraska.
After Smallwood joined the Nebraska staff in 2005-06, the Huskers made six trips to the NCAA Tournament, including the first two NCAA Sweet 16 bids in school history.
“We want to thank Sunny for her commitment to helping our program climb on the national level over the past nine seasons. We have made six trips to the NCAA Tournament, won two conference titles and advanced to a pair of Sweet 16s during that time, and she was a big part of that," Yori said. "She has a chance now to help her alma mater at Boise State in a similar way. She started her coaching career at the high school level in Boise, so in a lot of ways she is headed home, and we wish her the best."
Yori said the search to replace Smallwood on the Husker staff is underway.
"As we’ve done with each of our assistant coaching changes during my first 12 years at Nebraska, we’ll try to take advantage of an opportunity to find a great assistant coach who can help our program keep climbing.”
