The Nebraska women's tennis team gets their fall season underway this weekend at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. The invite is an individual tournament and only four of the available nine Huskers are participating. The four players headed to Midland are senior Maike Zeppernick, sophomore Maggy Lehmicke, and freshmen Mary Hanna and Brittany Brewster.
Beginning with singles Friday morning, Lehmicke is the No. 12 seed in the top 16 of the 61 participants. Lehmicke is slated to duke it out against Abilene Christian's Brittney Reed. Zeppernick faces Pepperdine's No. 7 seed Mata Cutura, and fellow Husker Brewster goes toe-to-toe with Rice's No. 5 seed Dominique Harmath. NU's Hanna rounds out the singles first round battling TCU's Hanna Victorsson.
All four members of the scarlet and cream will compete in doubles action. Lehmicke and Brewster team up to tackle North Texas' Alexis Thoma and Kseniya Bardabush while Zeppernick and Hanna pair up to challenge Texas State's Jessica Kahts and Eva Dench.
Eighteen teams have players participating in the event including Nebraska, the rest of the teams being: Pepperdine, Rice, North Texas, Texas State, TCU, Abilene Christian, Kansas, Baylor, Wichita State, New Mexico, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Penn State, Texas-Arlington, and Boise State.
The Racquet Club Collegiat Invite features competitors from both men's and women's tennis teams across multiple competitive divisions at the Racquet Club of Midland, Trinity Tennis Center and the Midland College Tennis Center.
