Jessica Furlan, Mara Griva and Chad Wright were all honored by the Big Ten Conference on Thursday. Furlan earned Female Track Athlete of the Week accolades, while Griva was named the Co-Field Athlete of the Week for the women and Wright was named the Male Co-Field Athlete of the Week.
Furlan earned the honor after recording a personal-best time of 4:15.17 in the 1,500 meters to finish third at the Drake Relays last weekend. Her time ranks first in the Big Ten, fourth all-time at Nebraska and 13th in the NCAA this season. The honor marks the second outdoor track and field weekly award of her career and of this season.
Griva captured Co-Field Athlete of the Week accolades after finishing first in the long jump (20-6 ¼) and the triple jump (44-3 ½) at the Drake Relays. Her triple jump effort ranks first in the Big Ten and third in the nation this season, while her long jump mark is second in the conference. This is her first Big Ten outdoor track and field weekly award. She shared the honor with Beth Rohl of Michigan State.
Wright was named the Big Ten Co-Field Athlete of the Week after finishing second with a personal-best mark of 207-11 in the discus at the Triton Invitational last weekend. His effort ranks first all-time in the Big Ten and second in the nation this season. The accolade marks the fourth Big Ten outdoor track and field weekly award of his career and the second this season. He shared the award with Derek Drouin of Indiana.
