Huskers Surge into Top 10 in Ohio

Akron, Ohio – Two Nebraska men’s golfers broke par in Tuesday’s final round of the Firestone Invitational as the Huskers fired their best score of the tournament (287) at Firestone Country Club’s North Course.

Ross Dickson recorded the best Husker finish of the season through three events with a tie for 13th at the par-72, 7,125-yard layout. Starting on Hole No. 10 in the final round, Dickson made two bogeys on the back nine for 38 but birdied Nos. 3, 5 and 8 for 3-under-par 33 on the front nine. The junior’s 1-under-par 71 earned him a 218 total over 54 holes. On Monday, Dickson added 78 and 69.

The Huskers showed successive improvement through the tournament to finish with 887 strokes. On Monday, Nebraska opened with 307 before responding with 293 in the afternoon. NU’s 287 in the final round marked its first subpar round of the season and first since the Denver Desert Shootout last March. The Huskers finished the Firestone Invitational tied for 10th with College of Charleston.

Kolton Lapa managed Nebraska’s best score of the day with 2-under-par 70. Lapa made five birdies in his final round, showing improvement after posting 80 and 73 on Monday. Lapa finishes tied for 37th at 223.

Senior Matt Record started on Hole No. 10, bogeying five holes on the back nine en route to 41. However, Record responded on the front nine with birdies on 1, 2, 3 and 6 for 33 and an 18-hole total of 74. Record added 73 and 75 in the first two rounds for 222, which tied for 32nd.

Calvin Freeman carded his best score of the tournament with even-par 72 at Firestone Country Club’s North Course on Tuesday. Freeman made three birdies in the process, improving on back-to-back 76s on Monday. He finished tied for 44th at 224.

Freshman Justin Jennings made three birdies for his best score of the tournament in the final round. Jennings paced his way to 4-over-par 76 for a three-round total of 235. He tied for 77th.

USC-Aiken took home the team championship on Tuesday, finishing with 7-over-par 871. Eastern Michigan’s Stuart Grehan earned individual medalist honors with 9-under-par 207.

The Huskers take two weeks off from competition before teeing it up at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, Oct. 21-22, at NMSU Golf Couse in Las Cruces, N.M. Three days later, Nebraska concludes its fall season at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational at Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas.
