Nebraska assistant coach Billy Maxwell was honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday as he was selected as the Midwest Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year.
Maxwell is in his 19th season with the Huskers and coaches Nebraska’s sprints, hurdles and relays. He helped aid Nebraska to a second-place finish at the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Championships and a No. 14 national ranking. Under his guidance, Oladapo Akinmoladun won the 60-meter hurdles at the conference championships, with a collegiate-leading and school-record breaking time of 7.61. Maxwell also coached the 4x400-meter relay squad to a school-record time of 3:06.93 at the Tyson Invitational earlier this season.
The award marks the third time Maxwell has received assistant coach of the year accolades, adding to his selections in 2005 and 2009.
