Webster Helps New Zealand to Series Win

Husker sophomore Tai Webster totaled eight points, two rebounds and two steals in helping New Zealand clinch an international series with South Korea with an 89-81 victory Saturday morning in Auckland, New Zealand.

Playing in his hometown for the first time since coming to Nebraska last summer, Webster came off the bench and played 23 minutes. He hit 3-of-5 shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers for the hosts. The 6-foot-4 sophomore guard keyed New Zealand’s decisive first-half run, scoring five of his eight points in 18-6 surge to build a 14-point lead.

The sophomore’s 3-pointer started a run of seven straight points for New Zealand after South Korea pulled to within 12-8, while his steal and basket with 7:58 left in the half capped the run and gave the hosts a 30-14 cushion.

New Zealand built a 52-32 halftime lead and led by as many as 25 points in the second half before South Korea cut the lead to single-digits in the final minutes.

Now, Webster, who played two of the three game against South Korea after arriving in New Zealand on Monday, will wait to see if he his named to the 14-member team that will compete in South Korea, China, Lithuania and Serbia to train for the FIBA World Cup. That team will be announced on Sunday.
