Reds Coast to 5-1 Win

Lincoln – Behind a five strikeout performance from Christian DeLeon, along with five combined hits from Michael Pritchard and Ryan Boldt, the Red Team took a 2-0 lead in the Huskers’ Red-White Series on Wednesday at Hawks Field with a 5-1 win.

DeLeon started for the Reds and delivered 4.0 shutout innings, giving up just one hit and no walks to go along with his five punchouts. Bob Greco closed the door, as the senior threw the final 3.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits. Chance Sinclair matched DeLeon for the White squad, throwing 4.0 inning of shutout ball as well with two strikeouts. A pair of errors cost the Whites, as only one of the Reds’ five runs were earned.

Seven Red players totaled a hit on the day, while Boldt, Pritchard and Pat Kelly each drove in a run. Blake Headley picked up two of the Whites’ three hits, while Corey Stringer notched the other hit with a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

A two-out error by the Whites in the top of the fifth broke the game open for the Reds. With runners on second and third following a two-out double down the left-field line by Boldt, Steven Reveles hit a chopper to short, where Jake Placzek had the ball skip off his glove. The error proved more costly than just one run, as Pritchard followed with an RBI single that scored Boldt. Reveles then scored on a passed ball and Kelly drove in Pritchard with another two-out single to put the Reds in front 4-0.

Boldt drove in another run for the Reds in the sixth with a one-out single, the freshman nearly picked up two RBIs on the play, but Taylor Fish, who singled earlier in the inning, was thrown out at the plate by left fielder Christian Cox.

The Reds were in position to score in the top of the first after a pair of one-out singles put runners on the corners, but the Whites were able to escape the jam as Kelly flew out to right and Pritchard was doubled off at first on the play. The Reds got a leadoff double from Austin Christensen to start the second, but were again unable to drive in a run as Sinclair stranded Christensen at third base.

The Whites got a leadoff single from Headley in the second, their first of the game. The Reds quickly cleared the bases though, as DeLeon struck out Stringer and Jason Parks threw out Headley for a quick double play. DeLeon then struck out Matt Leuty looking for a quick 1-2-3 inning.
