Nebraska Magazine, the official publication for UNL alumni and friends, did a nice job of chronicling Shawn Eichorst’s first year as Nebraska’s Director of Athletics.  Andrea Cranford, senior director of UNL alumni publications, wrote a feature story in the quarterly magazine that helps Husker fans look back at Eichorst’s inaugural year directing Nebraska Athletics.  She begins the story with a quote from Eichorst, who came into his new job vowing to carry on the history and tradition of Nebraska Athletics with no intent to reinvent the wheel.

Eichorst’s goal from the beginning was to listen, observe and when appropriate, ask questions, so that Nebraska Athletics could make something that is already great even better.  When you read Cranford’s piece, you will see how Eichorst’s first year of immersing himself into the Nebraska culture is in alignment with the vision he embraces.  Eichorst took the time to reach out to alumni around the state and across the country, making a good dent on his goal to visit all major sectors of Nebraska fans in his first five years at the helm.  He is truly committed, making 173 appearances in his first year – 146 in state and 27 out of state.

The feature article includes comments on Eichorst’s first year from Tom Osborne, his predecessor, and UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman, the one who hired him.  Equally interesting are insights shared by Ellen Weissinger, Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and Dean Donde Plowman from the College of Business Administration.  Diane Mendenhall, Executive Director of the Nebraska Alumni Association, appreciates the way Eichorst has introduced himself to Nebraska Alumni.  You’ll also read comments from Nebraska Baseball Coach Darin Erstad, and Sunny Russell, a senior on the rifle team and the President of Nebraska’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  In addition, Associate Athletic Director Keith Zimmer shares how Eichorst has genuinely honored his commitment to make academic services and life skills among his highest priorities.

The feature story includes Eichorst’s support for each of Nebraska’s head coaches and support units, and we think you will enjoy reading the complete article here.
