Huskers Completing Week One of Camp

By NU Athletic Communications

Saturday marked the first of six days during Nebraska football preseason practice with two on-field sessions. The Huskers went through a 1 ½-hour light workout early Saturday afternoon in Lincoln, and will be back on the practice fields later in the day for a full-scale practice.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media following the first session of the day and talked about the progress the team has made through the first week of camp, indicating he’s seen a “lot of good things” from both the offense and defense.

“We’ve had a good week and gotten a lot done,” the sixth-year Husker head coach said. “I like where we are, but we’ve still got a lot of teaching to be done. We know where we are right now and I like the progress we’ve made to this point.”

Pelini was asked about the progress of two talented freshmen I-backs Adam Taylor and Terrell Newby. Pelini said it is too early to give a full evaluation on the duo, but he has been impressed with their development to this point. Pelini said any freshmen I-back has to show the ability to be a complete back, including learning pass protection duties.

“Probably the biggest difference for guys being able to execute at running back is  being able to handle the protection aspect of it,” Pelini said. “A lot of guys haven’t been asked to do near what you have to have your backs do at this level. That’s a big part of it.”

Nebraska is “doing pretty good” on the injury front, according to Pelini. Redshirt freshman quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. was slowed for the first few days of camp, but Pelini said Armstrong has been feeling better each day as the week has progressed.

Following the Saturday afternoon workout, Nebraska will have Sunday off before entering a full week of practices on Monday. The Huskers are scheduled to conduct nine practices in six days, including two-a-day sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
