Huskers Finish Fifth at NCAA Championships
The Nebraska rifle team finished in fifth place at the NCAA Championships in Murray, Ky. on Saturday with a team score of 4,660.
“I am incredibly proud of this team this year,” Coach Underwood said. “They have worked incredibly hard to restore the tradition of excellence in this program.”
On Friday, Denise Martin who tallied a 586 led the Huskers in smallbore. The team finished with a score of 2,313 and was in fifith place after one day of competition. On Saturday, the team had a solid performance in air rifle, with Rachel Martin leading the way. R. Martin tallied a 590 for the Huskers and the team finished with an air rifle total of 2,347.
D. Martin’s smallbore score of 586 also earned her a spot in the finals for individual competition. D. Martin finished in third place with a score of 443.3
The NRA Collegiate All-American Teams were also announced this weekend. D. Martin and Phillips were named to the smallbore first team, while R. Martin was named to the second smallbore team. Phillips and D. Martin were also named to the third team CRCA All-American team, while R. Martin was an honorable mention.
Coach Underwood was voted coach of the year by the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association.
This match concludes Nebraska’s 2013-14 season. The team finished 10-2 in the regular season and came in third place at the conference championships. The Huskers return eight shooters next season and will lose two seniors, ReAnn Wilson and Sunny Russell.
