Huskers Begin Invite Strong In Missouri

By NU Athletic Communications

Kansas City, Mo. - The Nebraska women's tennis team saw a hefty load of matches at the Mizzou Tennis Invite on Friday to begin the weekend event. Nebraska began the day with doubles against Princeton at 9 a.m. then Missouri at 10:30 a.m. beforing closing the day in singles across the net from Oklahoma State at 1:30 p.m.

Nebraska faced Princeton in doubles to start the event. With the Tigers short-handed, OSU and MU had some players participate to fill the match. Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke and Mary Hanna connected to topple Princeton's Emily Hahn and Katherine Flannigan 8-7 while fellow Huskers Lisa Andersson and Brittany Brewster squashed the Tigers' Alanna Wolff and Dorothy Tang 8-4. Due to Princeton's lack of players, Mizzou's Alex Clark and Madison Rhyner filled in to oust NU's Izabella Zgierska and Maike Zeppernick 8-2 as Huskers Katerina Matysova and Hannah Sulz scorched teammate Lauren Wagner, who was paired with OSU's Mariah Burke, 8-2.

Next up for Nebraska in doubles was Missouri, who beat the Huskers in all matches. Mizzou's ITA pre-season No. 32-tied Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Elisha Gabb edged out NU's Andersson and Lehmicke while the Tigers' Kelli Hine and Cassidy Spearman emerged victorious over the Huskers' Brewster and Hanna 8-5. MU's Clark and Rhyner beat another Nebraska duo on the day in their match against Wagner and Sulz, scored at 8-2. The last match saw Mizzou's Tracy Dong and Rachel Stuhlmann defeat the scarlet and cream's Matysova and Zgierska 8-4. Nebraska's Zeppernick paired with OSU's Burke in a loss against Oklahoma State's Megan and Morgan McCray 5-8 in an exhibition match due to Princeton's lack of numbers.

Nebraska finished the day on the singles courts facing Oklahoma State. Lehmicke beat OSU's Kanyapat Narattana 5-7, 7-6 (0), 1-0 (12-10) while fellow Husker Brewster notched a nail-biter win over the Cowgirls' Carla Tur Mari 7-6 (5), 6-7 (1), 1-0 (12-10). NU's Zeppernick charged over Oklahoma State's Burke 6-4, 6-3 as the Huskers' Hanna slipped to OSU's (Megan) McCray 1-6, 1-6. Nebraska's Zgierska lost to the Cowgirls' Karyn Guttormsen 6-7 (3), 1-6 as fellow Big Red teammate Andersson fell to Oklahoma State's Maria Alvarez 2-6, 5-7. For the Cowgirls, (Morgan) McCray won against NU's Matysova 6-3, 6-0 to close out the match.

Two Huskers played in singles matches for the Princeton versus Mizzou pairing because of the short-handed roster from PU. Nebraska's Sulz narrowly defeated MU's Rhyner 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) while fellow Husker Wagner was swept by Mizzou's Clark 0-6, 0-6. Both matches will count towards the Husker players' records and be included in their ITA evaluations for rankings.

On Saturday, Nebraska is slated to start with doubles facing OSU at 9 a.m. followed by Mizzou at 10:30 a.m. before ending the day on the singles courts versus Princeton at 1:30 p.m.
