Huskers Prepare for Spartans and Wolverines

NU Hosts Michigan State and Michigan At Home

The Huskers face Big Ten opponents Michigan State on Friday, March 28 at 4 p.m. before hosting Michigan on Sunday, March 30 at 11 a.m. Nebraska sits at 8-8 overall after a double-loss weekend last week with 3-4 and 2-4 defeats to Wisconsin and Minnesota, respectively. Nebraska and Michigan State have met three times throughout history with Nebraska leading the series 2-1. NU and Michigan have also met three times in history with Nebraska trailing in series 0-3.

Huskers In The ITA National Rankings

Nebraska remained out of the ITA Top 75 when the new rankings were released on Tuesday, March 25. There are seven Big Ten teams in the ITA Top 75 and these teams are No. 11 Northwestern, No. 15 Michigan, No. 35 Indiana, No. 37 Illinois, No. 46 Purdue, No. 54 Ohio State and No. 63 Minnesota. Michigan and Northwestern are the only two Big Ten teams inside the Top 25.

The Spartans aren’t currently in the national rankings with no ranked singles players and no doubles players in the ITA rankings. Michigan State went 11-16 in 2013 and 1-10 in the Big Ten Conference. MSU didn’t qualify for the NCAA Tournament and were knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament in the first round by a 4-1 loss to Illinois. The Cornhuskers and Spartans have met three times throughout history, with Nebraska leading the series 2-1. The last match between the two teams was on Sunday, April 14, 2013 when the Huskers defeated the Spartans 6-1 in Lincoln, Neb.

The Wolverines are currently ranked No. 15 in the national ITA Top 75 rankings with four ranked singles players in No. 9 Emina Bektas, No. 22 Ronit Yurovsky, No. 119 Brooke Bolender and No. 123 Sarah Lee. Michigan also has four ranked doubles pairs in No. 18 Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas, No. 34 Ronit Yurovsky and Sarah Lee, No. 47 Ronit Yurovsky and Laura Ucros and No. 66 Sarah Lee and Amy Zhu. Michigan went 23-6 in 2013 with a 10-1 mark in the Big Ten Conference, sharing the regular-season title with the Huskers. The Wolverines lost 4-1 in the Big Ten Tournament championship to Northwestern and were knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in the Sweet 16 by then-No. 7 ranked UCLA by a score of 4-0. The last match between Nebraska and Michigan was on Saturday, April 13, 2013 that resulted in a 5-2 victory for the Wolverines, with both teams moving on to share the Big Ten regular-season title.

Looking Ahead

Nebraska hits the road for the next four matches after this weekend. The first two of these four have the Huskers set to face Indiana on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. in Bloomington, Ind. before moving on to Purdue on Sunday, April 6 at noon in West Lafayette, Ind.
