Nebraska Falls to Fresno State, 1-0

Fullerton, Calif. - A first-inning run held up for Fresno State on Sunday, as the Bulldogs upset the 14th-ranked Nebraska softball team, 1-0, in the Huskers' final game at the Judi Garman Classic.

The loss spoiled an otherwise strong weekend for Nebraska (15-8). The Huskers went 3-2 in the tournament, with a one-run extra-inning loss to No. 7 Arizona State and a dramatic 2-1 win over No. 6 Washington.

Senior right-hander Tatum Edwards (7-5) was the hard-luck loser for Nebraska, as she suffered her third 1-0 defeat of the season. Edwards fired a three-hitter and allowed only one run. Three of the first four hitters reached against Edwards, including a one-out RBI triple from Michelle Solomon. After the rough start, Edwards allowed just one hit over her final 6.2 innings while retiring 19 of the final 23 hitters she faced.

Edwards also paced the Husker offense with two of Nebraska's four hits, including a double. But the Huskers struggled to figure out Fresno State's Jill Compton. In a four-hit shutout, Compton (7-4) held Nebraska to just 1-for-11 with runners on base, as NU stranded seven runners.

Nebraska stranded a pair of runners in the first and then left runners at first and third in the second. The Huskers didn't threaten again until the fourth when Tatum Edwards led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Kylee Muir and advanced to third on a fly out from freshman MJ Knighten before being stranded at third.

Tatum Edwards then reached on a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth but did not advance.

In the bottom of the seventh, Knighten led off with a line drive to left but Kapri Angotti made a diving catch for the first out. Compton then recorded a strikeout before sophomore Alicia Armstrong reached on her second infield single of the game. Sophomore Kiki Stokes was then thrown out at first on a close play to end the game.

Senior Taylor Edwards, who hit a walk-off homer against Washington on Saturday, was waiting on deck but did not get a chance to hit in the seventh. She finished 0-for-2 and was hit by a pitch, as her hitting streak ended at 25 games, one shy of the school record.

Nebraska wraps up the tournament portion of its schedule next weekend with the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, Kan.
