Huskers Wrap Up Fall Season This Weekend
Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team wraps up its fall exhibition season this weekend, and all Husker fans are invited to come out to Bowlin Stadium for free fun and softball.
NU hosts Drake in a Friday doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. before closing the fall with a Sunday doubleheader against Creighton beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is free into both doubleheaders and fans are encouraged to wear pink on Sunday to promote Breast Cancer Awareness.
Fans coming out to enjoy free softball at Bowlin Stadium this weekend will see a Husker team that returns six starters and its entire pitching staff from last season, when Nebraska advanced to the Women's College World Series and finished with a No. 8 national ranking.
While the fall season is more about gaining experience and working on getting better, the Huskers have also fared well in the win-loss column this fall. Nebraska recorded a 3-1 record at the Big Red Fall Classic last weekend. The Huskers posted three shutouts in their four victories, including a pair of wins over UNO (9-0 and 1-0) and a 2-0 victory over Colorado State. NU's lone loss came in a 10-8 setback to the Rams.
Individually, several Huskers enjoyed strong performances at the Big Red Fall Classic. Sophomore Hailey Decker went 8-for-14 last weekend to post a .571 batting average. She started all four games at second base and added two doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Freshman Kat Woolman earned three starts last weekend in her Bowlin Stadium debut, and she produced a .545 average (6-for-11) with a double and three runs scored. Senior Kylee Muir had five hits in 13 at bats to post a .385 average, while tying for the team lead with four RBIs. Freshman MJ Knighten also drove in four runs at the Big Red Fall Classic.
In the circle, senior All-American Tatum Edwards went 2-0 last weekend and did not allow a run in a pair of complete games. In addition to her two shutouts, Edwards struck out 14 batters.
After wrapping up its fall season this weekend, Nebraska is off for four months until opening the 2014 season at the Hotel Encanto Invitational Feb. 7-9, hosted by New Mexico State University.
