NU Heads South To Face UAB, Georgia State

NU Hits the Road to Face UAB and Georgia State

The No. 59 Huskers head to Atlanta, Ga. to face UAB on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. and Georgia State on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. in non-conference dual matches. The Huskers sit at 4-3 overall, with a 2-3 mark against ranked teams including a 1-1 mark at the ITA Kick-off Weekend event in Los Angeles where they were able to grab a 4-1 victory over fellow Big Ten members Wisconsin.

Nebraska duo Marc Herrmann and Beau Treyz have been impressive at No. 2 doubles this spring with a 4-2 overall. During the ITA Kick-off event, Herrmann and Treyz secured a win over No. 33 ranked Hugo Dojas and Maxime Hinnisdaels of Texas Tech. The Nebraska pair have performed fantastic this season with an outstanding 12-4 overall and secured the Big Ten Indoors Championships Tournament doubles title during the fall preseason.

Herrmann played his first match at No. 1 singles in their previous win over Denver, where he knocked off the No. 86-ranked Henry Craig. The Huskers are 2-3 against ranked opponents suffering losses to No. 36 Florida State, No. 53 Texas Tech and No. 49 Louisville while toppling No. 66 Wisconsin and No. 52 Denver. Freshman Vasileios Stavropoulos holds a 4-1 singles record this spring, a strong start to his first year with the Huskers.

Huskers In The ITA National Rankings

Nebraska remain No. 59 in the ITA Top 75 after its 4-3 start to the season. The national ITA Top 75 rankings were released on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and did not release a new list on Feb. 11 due to the National Indoor Men’s Championships.

The Big Red are one of 11 Big Ten teams in the ITA Top 75. Nebraska is joined by No. 1 Ohio State, No. 14 Illinois, No. 29 Northwestern, No. 33 Michigan, No. 43 Penn State, No. 49 Minnesota, No. 53 Michigan State, No. 58 Indiana, No. 67 Wisconsin and No. 71 Purdue. The Huskers are the ninth-highest ranked Big Ten team.

The Blazers are 4-3 coming off of a two match winning streak over conference opponents Tulane and UTSA ready to face the No. 59-ranked Huskers. UAB went 15-11 overall in 2013 and only won one conference match over Southern Mississippi 4-3. The Blazers aren’t ranked with one ranked singles players in No. 86 Chris Helliar and no ranked doubles pairs.

2013 Record: 15-11, 6-2 Sun Belt
National Ranking: NR

The Panthers are 4-6 coming off of a 4-3 victory over Tennessee Tech and will face UAB prior to facing No. 59-ranked Nebraska. Georgia State went 15-11 overall in 2013 with a 6-2 conference mark and were the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Champions. GSU isn’t ranked as a team and has no ranked singles players and no ranked doubles pairs. Head Coach Joerg Barthel is a Husker tennis alumni and ex-coach, leaving NU to join the GSU staff as the head of the program in 2012.

Looking Ahead

Following this weekend, Nebraska remains on the road for a double-header visit to Ithaca, N.Y. to challenge Monmouth and Cornell, with match times yet to be determined. The Huskers return home the folllowing weekend on March 7-9 to host Utah, North Dakota, and Drake.
