Maria Laura Fernandez played like a seasoned veteran during her freshman season, turning in a phenomenal year for the Huskers. After going 2-2 on the singles court in the fall, Fernandez was almost unbeatable during the spring, posting a 15-3 record. She played most of her matches at No. 3 singles, going 11-3 on the year, but went a perfect 2-0 at both the No. 2 and 4 spots.
Fernandez was even more impressive in doubles play, teaming up with sophomore Katarina Balan to become Big 12 champions at No. 2 doubles. The tandem dominated the field all year, winning 16 of 18 matches at No. 2 doubles spot, while also winning both matches they played at No. 1 doubles. The 18 total wins were the most recorded by any Husker doubles pair during the 2000 spring season.
In high school, Fernandez played for Coach Miguel Angel Reyes Varela at Colegio America de Puebla. During her high school career, she was ranked No. 2 in all of Mexico in singles and No. 1 in doubles.
The daughter of Maria Luisa and Gerardo Fernandez, Maria was born on July 27, 1980, in Puebla, Mexico. She is an international business major. Fernandez has two older brothers, Gerardo and Luis.
