Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska men’s golf signee Ben Maschka captured individual medalist honors at the Nebraska Class A State Boys Golf Tournament following the final round at Holmes Park Golf Course on Thursday, May 29.
Maschka fired a pair of 68s at the two-day, 36-hole tournament to lead Omaha Creighton Prep to its third consecutive team title. In Wednesday’s opening round, he made four birdies, three of which were on the back nine, during his bogey-free round at Holmes Golf Course. Maschka’s first birdie came on the par-5 eighth hole before he added red numbers on Nos. 13, 16 and 17.
On Thursday, the Creighton Prep senior went out in 3-under-par 33 before a back-nine 35 to hold off runner-up Clayton Peterson of Lincoln Southeast by one stroke. Maschka birdied the fourth hole before stringing together three consecutive birdies on Nos. 8 through 10. He suffered his first bogey of the tournament on the 11th hole and added an additional one on No. 14.
For the second consecutive day, he birdied Nos. 16 and 17 before parring the 18th hole to collect the state crown. His 8-under-par 136 total over two rounds ties for the fifth-best 36-hole score in boys golf state tournament history.
As a team, the Junior Jays set a state record with a 14-under-par 562 total for the event. After a first-round 279, Creighton Prep shot 283 in Thursday’s final round. Complete scoring for the state tournament is available on the NSAA’s website.
Maschka also played a crucial role on last year’s championship team, tying for first individually in regulation before falling to teammate Carson Schaake in a playoff for medalist honors.
Maschka signed his national letter of intent during the fall 2013 signing period to join the Huskers for the 2014-15 season. He joins Niko Vui, who signed during the spring, as newcomers to Nebraska’s roster next season.
